B E S T Bridal Prep Tips

Here are our four BEST Bridal Prep Tips to help you achieve your beautiful, camera ready hair & makeup. It is understood that you are a busy bride and have a lot to do to prepare for your wedding. So lets keep it simple for you. All you have to do to prep your skin and hair for the big day is remember the anagram B E S T:
  1. B - Bridal Prep Tips

    B - BROWS
I can’t stress enough how important eyebrow shaping is. Good eye brows frame your face and can give you an instant face lift, making your eyes pop! If you feel your brows have been over plucked, let them grow back and go to a professional to have them shaped. Brow waxing should be done at least 2 days prior to the big day.
  2. E - Bridal Prep Tips

    E - EXFOLIATE
Do not get a facial close to your trial-run makeup or WEDDING DATE! Some facials are meant to draw out impurities in the skin which can cause breakouts. Do prep your skin by exfoliating before the trial-run so your makeup lasts longer. Try using a mask that can help minimize your pores. Clay products are fantastic for pore shrinking and soaking up excess oil on your skin. Green tea products are also good to use as it is an antioxidant. Exfoliate the lips. Lipstick will stay on longer and look smoother. Skin care is the most important step in any beauty regimen and it makes a HUGE difference on how good your makeup will look!
  3. S - Bridal Prep Tips

    S - Shampoo
It's best to wash your hair 1 or even 2 days before the trial run and wedding. Make sure to blow-dry your hair upside down for extra volume. DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR ON THE DAY OF YOUR WEDDING!!!!!!!!! When creating an up do the natural oils in the hair give it better holding properties. These oils help hold and mold an up do into place. This will ensure you hair has some "grip" the next day and is easier to style.
  4. T - Bridal Prep Tips

    T- Trim
Two weeks before the wedding is the perfect time to get your hair trimmed. When your ends begin to split they cause breakage and brittle hair. Brittle hair has no shine, creates frizzy ends and is harder to curl. If you have several inches of split ends and wish not to trim that much you can deep condition once a week to help mend and smooth them. Never drastically change your hairstyle or color immediately before your wedding. Any coloring should be done about 2 weeks before allowing time for the color to settle and soften to look more natural.
Color Theory,
Explained
Welcome to the color wheel.
There are many tricks and nuances that go into creating a beautiful makeup look, but before you learn those, any makeup artist worth his or her salt will tell you that it’s crucial to understand how colors work.

  1. Understanding Color
    Understanding Color
Choosing the right makeup palette to complement your complexion is not hard to do if you know how to select a family of colors that work for your skin tone, eye color and hair shade. For your wedding it’s imperative to know color tones and what looks good with skin undertones and eyes. Just as an artist who paints knows how to mix colors, the same goes for makeup. For instance, purple and deep brown tones can make blue or green eyes look incredible! If you have fair skin, a soft blush undertone in foundation can work better than more yellow tones, and mixing in orange for warmth can make deep skin tones glow. The more you know your color scale, the more creative and confident you’ll be.
  2. Colors:
    Colors:
Primary Colors: Red, yellow and blue. These colors make up all the other colors on the spectrum. Secondary Colors: Orange, green, and purple. These colors are the result of mixing yellow + red= orange, yellow = blue = green, red + blue = violet. Tertiary colors: These are the colors on either side of the secondary colors. For example, red-violet or blue-violet, which you get by adding a little more of the closest primary color.
  3. The Color Wheel
    The Color Wheel
I love this color wheel because it has white in the center and darker colors around the rim. The colors closest to the center are pastel since they have white added to them, and the colors closest to the rim are muted tones because they have been mixed with black. Complementary colors: Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. These are colors that tend to “vibrate” when next to each other, such as blue next to orange, or purple next to yellow. Analogous colors: Colors that are found right next to each other on the color wheel and are generally in the same family.
  4. Hue, Tint, Tone, and Shade
    Hue, Tint, Tone, and Shade
Hue: Hue is the true color of primary colors, secondary colors and tertiary colors. These colors are our, basic and intense. The true hue in the photo is purple. Tint: Tint is adding white to pure hue. Tone: Tone is made by adding gray to pure hue. Shade: Shade is made by adding black to a pure hue. This photo is an example of 10 steps of division between pure hue (purple) and Tint, Tone or Shade. The highlighted area is 50% hue and 50% Tint, Tone or Shade. As you progress closer in either direction the hue becomes either more or less saturated with Tint (White), Tone (Gray) or Shade (Black).
  5. Color tips:
    Color tips:
*In the world of makeup, complementary colors don’t really “compliment” each other—they can be quite overpowering when used together; however they can be great for a statement look. *You will find many analogous color eyeshadow palettes in the world of makeup. They are great for adding depth and highlights because you have different tones of the same color family. *Warm colors: Colors with red, orange or yellow undertones. Warm colors are bright and energetic, and tend to pop forward—they draw attention to whatever they are on. Cool colors: Colors with blue or red undertones. Cool colors are more soothing and tend to recede a bit more.
Wedding Day
Perfect Timing
From theater makeup and set design to practical application of working in Hollywood and being on sets I have learned several tips and tricks over the years. First, it’s best to understand color and light before going into anything else. In order to see color you need light, and what time of daylight matters. The quality and type of lighting affects how we see color.

Here are some tips for perfect timing makeup!
  1. Perfect Timing
    Perfect Timing
The time of day for your wedding will affect your makeup choices. Natural looks for morning weddings and a more dramatic look for an evening ceremony. The way the sunlight changes throughout the day affects the way your makeup appears in photos. Lets divide ceremony’s into four categories: morning, midday, late afternoon and evening. With each time choice there are certain details you’ll want to consider. Paying attention to details such as light and color can help you look amazing on your wedding day.
  2. Timing:
    Timing:
Morning Bride - If your planning a morning wedding, your makeup should appear soft and pretty to match the cool soft morning light. Midday Bride - If your planning a wedding in the middle of the day, be aware that the midday sun can cast harsh shadows on your face. This is the harshest light to be photographed in since the sun is directly above you and casts downward shadows. Late-afternoon Bride - Late afternoon sun is referred to as “the golden hour” It is the most beautiful light you can be photographed in. With the sun beginning to set and the sky creating a beautiful warm glow, it is far more forgiving in every way. Evening Bride - If you love to glam it up, an evening wedding is the perfect time for this look! Every photo will be taken with a flash; this makes a difference in your makeup choices.
  3. Morning Bride Makeup:
    Morning Bride Makeup:
Morning wedding makeup should appear soft and pretty to match the cool soft morning light. If you are prone to breakouts I would not recommend this time of day for your wedding. - You will want to wear as little foundation as possible due to the softer natural light. - Go light on the powder so your look stays natural. Heavy powder can look artificial in morning light. - Stay away from bold eye shadow colors. Choose warmer, soft shades that complement your eye color. The lighting at this time of day will accentuate any harsh colors or lack of blending. - Make sure to keep your eyeliner subtle, soft and close to the lash line. False eyelashes will help define your eyes really well. - Lip color should always be soft and natural. - Take note that everything will photograph darker than it appears to the eye because the light is so soft.
  4. Midday Bride Makeup:
    Midday Bride Makeup:
If your planning a wedding in the middle of the day, be aware that the midday sun can cast harsh shadows on your face. - This is the time of day when you want to wear the least amount of foundation possible. - Make sure your blush has a matte finish. A crème blush is a great choice for this time of day. Crème blush does not work well on oily skin so if you have oily skin, stick to a powder blush. - Due to the harsh midday lighting if your eye makeup is too dark your eyes will photograph like two dark holes. Use a highlight with shimmer to open you eyes as this is the most important shadow choice for this time of day. Make sure your contour shade has a matte finish. Using too many shiny shades with shimmer will cause your eyes to look theatrical not natural. - Since the sunlight grows stronger as midday approaches, every makeup line becomes more visible. Take note to blend your foundation, blush and eye shadows really well... there is no such thing as over blending.
  5. Late-afternoon Bride Makeup:
    Late-afternoon Bride Makeup:
Late afternoon sun is referred to as “the golden hour” It is the most beautiful light you can be photographed in. With the sun beginning to set and the sky creating a beautiful warm glow, it is far more forgiving and you can add a little more drama to your makeup. - Because the light is so forgiving, you can use a little more foundation. Matte skin always photographs better than shinny skin so don’t forget to use powder. - You can make richer color choices, add a little shimmer to you blush, and apply more dramatic eyeshadows shades. - As evening approaches, you photographer will have to use a flash, so make sure to add a little more color to your face. When photographers use a flash, the burst of light can make you look washed out. Blush is a necessity for flash photography, and a little will go a long way. Another way to avoid looking washed out is to add a little bronzer to your contour areas. We will discuss how to contour in the application section of this page. - A richer lip color goes a long way with this lighting so don’t be afraid to go a little bold.
  6. Evening Bride Makeup:
    Evening Bride Makeup:
If you love to glam it up, an evening wedding is the perfect time for this look! Go dramatic, play with color and be able to wear more coverage than any other time of the day and still photograph beautifully. - If you have less than perfect skin, you can wear more foundation and powder and still look natural. - Make sure to use a bronzer to give your skin a natural glow. Sculpting your face with highlights and shadows will add dimension to your photos. - Everything should be more defined from your lips, eyes, cheekbones and jawline. This is because the flash will wash everything out and flatten your face. However, “more defined” does not mean darker. - Shimmery eye shadows will look stunning but stay away from frosted colors. - False eyelashes are a must for evening brides. If you do not want to wear false eyelashes, layer your mascara for maximum length and volume. - A smoky eye is a perfect time for this eye shadow look. Make sure you have lip color and powder ready and close by for easy touchups! You never know when the camera will flash!
Perfect Application
You are beautiful.
Despite what magazines show you, or what you have seen on TV, there is no such thing as a naturally perfect face. Every face has its own unique features that you and your fiancé love. So lets start celebrating your assets and the very unique and beautiful you!
  1. Basics
    0
    Basics
Every bride wants beautiful, flawless skin on her wedding day. The key to this is to establish a good skincare routine at least two months before the ceremony. This will give your skin a chance to adjust to new products. You should experiment and select your makeup look in advance and practice makes perfect! Know your skin and use the products together to see how they interact and how they make you feel. Don’t try new products on the day of - this can cause skin irritations and any number of issues. Wearing your makeup in the daytime, out in the sun, perspiring a little helps you to understand your makeup comfort level. Perfection is all about practice and experimenting. Don’t forget to photograph yourself in your new makeup and at different times of the day too. This will give you all the information and adjustments you will need to make your wedding day makeup look amazing.
  2. One month away:
    1
    One month away:
    1. Invest in a Keratin Treatment for your hair - If you have naturally rebellious or frizzy strands. Schedule yourself for an in-salon keratin treatment one month before the wedding so your hair is under control and doesn’t fall flat on the day of. 2. Experiment with Eyelash Extensions The semi-permanent glue used with lash extensions is water-proof so they won’t rub off if you cry on your wedding day. Having the lashes attached a full month out will ensure your eyes won't have an adverse reaction. This will also give you a chance to adapt to how they feel. Day of application can feel strange if your not used to wearing false eyelashes. Then, a few days before the event, have them touched up. 3. To boost your pre-ceremony glow, have your dermatologist do a gentle exfoliation, like a light chemical peel or a gentle laser treatment. 4. Brighten Your Smile: There will be a photographer documenting the occasion so it pays to ensure that your smile is camera-ready. Book a professional cleaning to remove surface stains and plaque. Then, one day later, go back for an in-office whitening procedure. Maintain the brightness, using over-the-counter whitening strips up until a day before.
  3. The night & day before:
    2
    The night & day before:
Prep Your Hands and Feet: Your digits and twinkle toes need to look picture perfect too. Your best bet is to get a manicure and pedicure a day earlier to ensure chip-free lacquer or Gel polish. Prime Your Skin: For a last-minute boost on evening before your wedding, apply a gentle exfoliating mask like "Atomy Evening Care Peeling Gel" followed by "Atomy 7 Solutions Gel Mask". Lips: Try to exfoliate them once a week but especially the night before. To exfoliate, simply apply a generous layer of lip balm and let it soak in for a few minutes, then take a soft baby's toothbrush and brush your lips. after treatment, apply a generous amount of lip balm before bed. Brows: The night before you should give your already shaped brows a tweeze for any strays and brush them with a toothbrush. **Avoid any and all Alcohol the night before as this can make you look puffy in the morning.**
  4. It's you wedding day! Part 1
    3
It's you wedding day! Part 1
    1. Start your wedding day look by washing your face and drinking a glass water. 2. Second, apply your toner, allowing it to completely soak into your skin and then apply your SPF moisturizer. 3. Next apply your primer for long lasting makeup application. 4. Apply your concealer, to cover up any imperfections, being mindful of the time of day you are having your ceremony, followed by your foundation. 5. Apply your foundation using a shade that is closest to your current skin tone (if you applied a self tanner use a foundation that matches your current skin tone.) Using a makeup sponge, a foundation brush, or if none of the above are available use your finger to blend your foundation. The key is to blend blend blend to a smooth and flawless look. Make sure to finish blending in a downward motion so that any facial hairs lie flat. Finally blot with a tissue to absorb excess moisture. 6. If you are planning to use highlighting and contouring techniques to define your features, this is the time to apply it. See the next section on highlighting and contouring to understand how. 7. If you are not applying contouring and highlights, using a powder brush or puff, apply a generous dusting of loose powder to your face to set your foundation.
  5. Highlighting and Contouring:
    4
    Highlighting and Contouring:
Facial contouring is a technique in which makeup enhances one's natural facial structure. It was originally designed in the theater to enhance facial emotions and expressions. This technique allowed the audience to clearly see the expressions of the actors. It was then adapted for the cinema and black and white films providing dimension and depth to actresses and actors. This technique progressed into the modeling world for fashion shows and photo shoots. It helps with flash photography to prevent models from looking flat and washed out. While it is a technique that has been use by artists for centuries, today it is now made popular and even sometimes credited to Kardashian's and thus part of many women’s daily routines. For me, contouring is subtly/intelligently defining one’s features and for it to be elegant, it should be barely noticeable. With the right tools and knowing your natural color tones you can create the illusion of a slimmer jawline, a sculpted nose, chiseled cheekbones or defined eyes - and or you can beautifuly highlight your amazing features and be the most beautiful you you can be!
  6. Contouring and Face Shape
    5
    Contouring and Face Shape
In order to understand how to highlight and contour your face, you need to first understand your facial structure. What shape is your face, do you know the answer? No? Maybe? not sure? My advice is to say no every time! Now do this exercise! Stand in front of a mirror and take an eye pencil or lipstick and trace the outline of your face on the mirror. It is with this exercise that most people should be able to associate a shape of their face. If not, I highly recommend taking a picture for your reference and going to Sephora or any mall makeup counter and asking ... "What shape is my face?" Your answer will be one of the following: Round, Long, Square, Heart, or Oval. Lets start with the basics: For highlighting and contouring to work, you need the following: 1. You will need 5 shades of foundation. The first color should match you skin exactly. The others are 2 shades light and 2 shades darker than your skin color. See the section on Finding or Making the right colors for your skin tone. 2. Your tools are your friends so get some blending brushes or sponges. My rule for brushes is to have a foundation brush the size of your thumb and one for detail the size of your pinky.
  7. It's your wedding day! Part 2
    6
It's your wedding day! Part 2
    8. If you have applied highlighting and contouring, set your work with powder. You can use a powder that matches your foundation and apply all over, or apply to all but the contour areas and use a few shades darker for the contour zones. 9. Lets move on to your eyes: Its important that your eye makeup accentuates rather than dominates you. First apply a liner. You have a few choices; a pencil, liquid liner, cake or powder. It's really a matter of preference. 10. Lashes: Curl your lashes, and apply false eyelashes if you choose. If you have chosen to apply the semi permanent lashes you should check to make sure they are holding and if necessary apply additional adhesive. 11. Next apply your eye shadows and make sure that you color your brows with a little brow powder or brow pencil. 12. Cheeks: Apply color directly to you cheekbone. Not sure where that is, it's ok. First smile, place your finger in the center of your apple. Next, place your thumb at the top of your ear where it connects to your head. Now bring your thumb forward to your index finger. The bone you feel is your cheekbone. Now apply the color along this line. 13. Line your lips with liner and feather this line inward so you are not left with just an outline. Next color your lips. I recommend lip stain but its really up to you. 14. Have extra powder and lipstick in your hand bag and with your made of honor or in your grooms pocket.
  8. Finishing touches
    7
    Finishing touches
Practice makes perfect. Again try out all different looks before you settle on the one! Practice your smile and poses and remember to selfie everything for your records. Talk to your wedding photographer about looks or poses. Work out a plan for your photography and know what you want. Don't leave out your groom. make sure he gets all the fun guy photos too! Last but not least, have fun and enjoy your amazing day. Thats it - Your now ready for the big day!

    Setting the Stage
Before you begin to put on your wedding day makeup there are a few things you must do to get that perfect look. 1. Start with a clean face. Gently wash your face with Atomy Evening Care Foam Cleanser. Pat your skin dry then apply Atomy Toner. Let Atomy Toner fully absorb into your skin. Next apply your moisturizer; personally I use Nerium AD Day cream. Let all these products and your face rest for a few minutes before progressing to the next step.
  2. The Perfect Canvas - Primers
    1
    The Perfect Canvas - Primers
The perfect canvas to any artist is a well-primed or prepped canvas. Contrary to what you might think we don’t just start painting without establishing a solid foundation first. Primers create the perfect canvas for makeup application. They can reduce fine lines and pores, even your skin tone and add extra staying power for long lasting makeup. The quality of your canvas matters so let start with the very best possible. Products we love: SMASHBOX - PHOTO FINSIH FOUNDATION PRIMER This is the primer that started it all and it is still a personal favorite. SMASHBOX - PHOTO FINISH PORE MINIMIZING PRIMER This is especially great for anyone with slightly larger pores as it reduces the appearance for up to 8 hours. SMASHBOX - PHOTO FINISH HYDRATING This is a must for every bride having a wedding in Denver CO. URBAN DECAY – EYESHADOW PRIMER POTION ORIGIONAL Eye shadow Primer Potion makes shadow apply more smoothly and keeps your color vibrant and crease-free for 24 hours. And it’s paraben-free.
  3. Foundation Colors
    2
    Foundation Colors
Finding the right color for your skin tone is very important and can be challenging. I recommend always having color options in your makeup bag when it comes your baseline color. A little sun, some self tanner, a blemish here or there can make a big difference in what colors you choose. Personally I like both liquid and crème foundations. Liquid foundations are easier to blend your own colors and have ready for the big day, while creme foundations require you have several shades. For example: if you have 3 different color foundations ranging from mocha, exactly your color shade to white light, you can create dozens of different colors.

  5. Blush Blush Blush
    4
    Blush Blush Blush
The intensity of color you are wearing on your eyes and lips can help determine the amount of blush you should use. If you are wearing a strong lip color you will want to wear less blush just as if you wear a light lip color you will want more blush. A powder blush is the easiest to use but you can also use a crème or liquid blush. Personally I recommend a combination of both for lasting staying power. If you are only applying a powder blush, you first need to set your foundation by applying powder. see the next section on powder and then apply your powder blush. 1. After applying your foundation, apply a crème blush to the apples of your cheeks and cheekbones. 2. Dust your face with powder (see powder section) 3. Apply a bronzer along your cheekbone – starting at the back and sweeping forward towards your apples. 4. Smile and apply a powder blush similar in color to your crème blush on your apples, then sweep this color back up to your ear.
